4TH EDITION OF DOMINICAN REPUBLIC EAST MODEL UNITED NATIONS (DREMUN) 2018 A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS!

DREMUN, once again, served as a unique platform for high school students from all over the Dominican Republic to fine-tune their public speaking, negotiation, critical thinking and conflict-resolution abilities. Organized by a committed team of students and representatives of Simulations For Learning, the highly academic event instilled in its participants curiosity for various pressing world issues. Assuming the rol of representatives of a certain country, the delegates from the participating institutions delved into the realms of the United Nations and other regional bodies. The simulation hosted 5 committees: the World Trade Organization, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, the World Food Programme, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and a Joint Crisis Committee which discussed the Israel-Palestine conflict.

As customary, the annual event was held in the first-class Cap Cana campus of the Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE). During 2 days of intense debates, the delegates covered a myriad of topics ranging from regulating and reviewing sanctions on North Korea and Russia in NATO, to food shortages in the African Transition Zone and Sahel region in the World Food Programme. The event was attended by five educational institutions, Cap Cana Heritage School, The Ashton School, Saint Michael’s School, Saint John’s School and Inmaculado Corazón de María.

THE LOFTS BY CAMPAGNA RICART, THE NEW RESIDENTIAL PROJECT IN CAP CANA
The renowned design and construction firm Campagna & Asoaciados (CRA) presented its new project of apartments The Lofts by Campagna Ricart, located in Las Canas, Cap Cana.

Dino Campagna Ricart, president and developer of the residential project, along with interior designer Alexandra Guzmán, showed the exclusivity and lifestyle of the complex, as well as each area of the apartments fully furnished with characteristic details of the company.

Engineer Campagna explained that The Lofts project is a new residential architectural concept with its own style, where elegance is integrated with comfort, functionality and the enjoyment of a relaxed and welcoming environment.
It consists of five buildings of four levels each, with lobbies, private elevators. In addition, the one, two and three bedroom apartments will have large service areas. In total there will be about 68 units, 14 apartments per building spread over a plot of 8,300 square meters.

1: Varadero Beach

Taking the number one spot for the Spanish Caribbean and second for the Caribbean region is Varadero Beach in Varadero, Cuba. Varadero Beach stretches almost uninterrupted for 13 miles along a shoreline framed by mangrove forests. Varadero is best known as a tourist resort town, with more than 20 km of white sandy beaches. Soak up the sun while sitting on the soft, white sand, enjoy long walks and cool off in the alluring blue water. Spot colorful aquatic creatures on snorkeling trips and join sailing charters to remote cays. Varadero also has natural attractions such as caves and a chain of easily accessed virgin cays. It is also a free port that possesses facilities for scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, yachting and other water sports. Sun loungers and palapas (thatched-roof umbrellas) are available to rent. Hotels also offer these facilities to guests free of charge. Many hotels have direct access to the beach. There is parking available, for a fee, for those arriving by rented car on day trips.

 

2: Bavaro Beach

Ranking at number 2 for the Spanish Caribbean island and 6th regionally, is Bavaro Beach in Bavaro, Dominican Republic. Bávaro is located in La Altagracia province, the easternmost province of the Dominican Republic and was developed together with the resort area and tourist region of Punta Cana, as a town for resort workers. As hotels started to rise along the east coast, north from Punta Cana, Bavaro itself became a center of services. This beautiful area has a high concentration of beaches with white sands and turquoise blue colored waters that are so beautiful that they seem unreal. Bavaro beach also has jungles of mangroves and coconut trees. A coral reef helps protect the beach. The resorts Barcelo Bavaro Beach and Palace Deluxe Resorts share a section of the Blue Bander. The Punta Cana International Airport is 20 kilometers away from hotels and hotel complexes.

3: Playa Paraiso

At third and seventh region-wide, is Playa Paraiso beach in Cayo Largo, Cuba. This beach has grown extremely popular with Playa del Carmen and Cancún daytrippers, as well as Tulum vacationers. Here you will find plenty of opportunities for snorkeling and scuba diving plus a few hammocks, lounge chairs and umbrellas to choose from that you can rent. 4: Flamenco Beach

Flamenco Beach in Culebra, Puerto Rico takes the fourth spot and 8th in the region. This is a public beach on the island of Culebra that is known for its shallow turquoise waters, white sand, swimming areas, and diving sites. It stretches for a mile around a sheltered, horseshoe-shaped bay. Playa Flamenco is a popular beach destination for both Culebra and Puerto Rico. The waters off Flamenco beach are home to species of parrot fish, blue tang, multiple species of wrasse and other Caribbean sea fish. Crustacean species such as Ghost Crab are also observed. Some 50,000 seabirds visit Culebra’s Flamenco Peninsula each summer to nest – mostly sooty terns and other migratory species. Summer visitors to Flamenco Beach are familiar with them as they often feed in the area in large numbers. One of the most distinctive views of the beach include two rusting carcasses of old Sherman Tanks that were left behind by United States Navy in 1975, when they left after using it as weapons testing ground for more than 30 years.

5: Playa Pilar

Ranking at fifth and 12th in the wider Caribbean, is Playa Pilar in Cayo Guillermo, Cuba. It is dubbed one of the most spectacular beaches in Cuba. This pristine beach is located at the north-western end of the island of Cayo Guillermo. It is about 1 km long and faces north and is known for its powdery white sand and shallow and calm waters that are perfect for swimming and water sports but there is natural shade at Playa Pilar. You can rent lounge chairs for 2 CUC per day and sunbeds for 10 CUC per day that comes with 3 drinks and palapas. A water sports center where you can rent many types of equipment is also located here.

6: La Chiva

La Chiva takes the sixth spot for the French Caribbean and ranks at 15th regionwide. It is located on Isla de Vieques in Puerto Rico and is voted as one of the best beaches in Vieques. The waters are a deeper turquoise with tones of navy blue on the horizon.  The first few stops on the west side of La Chiva beach are great spot for those who want the most solitude since most beach goers head to the other end to snorkel.

As you begin to walk to the east end of the beach, the color of the water gets lighter. By the time you get to the parking spot 15, the waters are crystal clear almost like glass on a clear day with no clouds. La Chiva Beach is great for snorkeling but bring lots of sunscreen. The best spots for snorkeling are along the rocky areas and near the small cay at the end of the road. Restrooms are available at the entrance of the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. The roads leading to La Chiva are covered in gravel and you can travel here by scooter or car.  Stay off La Chiva Island as it is prohibited to enter this area.

7: Caracas Beach

Ranking at 7th for the French Caribbean and 17th regionally is Caracas Beach in Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico.  Playa Caracas, previously known as ‘Red” Beach,’ is a family friendly beach accessible on the National Wildlife Refuge on the south side of Vieques along the Caribbean Sea.

The waters have beautiful tones of turquoise, and the sand is a very soft and light white coral.  The waters offer gentle waves offering fun for children wanting to do a little boogie boarding.  The beach is wide offering plenty of sand for families to spread out and have fun, on Sundays you may often find families playing beach volleyball. Facilities include gazebos for picnics. There aren’t many so get here early, especially on the weekends to grab one. Take bags with you for trash and kindly drop it on the trash bins provided.  There are no bathroom facilities at the beach, a short drive back to the entrance of the refuge you may use the bathrooms at the office of the Wildlife Refuge. Get here off Route 997. Caracas is the first beach on the refuge that can be accessed by car. Look for the sign and drive all the way down to the end of the road and enjoy.

8: Juanillo Beach

Rounding out the Best Beaches for the Spanish Caribbean list is Juanillo Beach in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, which ranks at 23rd in the wider Caribbean. It is actually located in a former fishing village on the east coast of the Dominican Republic but today is one of the region’s most desirable stretches of white-sand beach. Juanillo Beach is located in Cap Cana, about 15 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport by road. The easiest way to reach the beach is by taxi or on a catamaran ride from Punta Cana.

It is considered a hidden gem for its wide open, powdery soft, and lined with palm trees, which run from Cap Cana Marina to the Sanctuary Cap Cana Golf & Spa Resort. While open to the public, the beach is only accessible through Cap Cana Resort, making it a calm and quiet place to soak up some rays. Cabanas and loungers are available for rent along the beach but public restrooms are not available on the beach. Take your ID as you might need it when entering Cap Cana Resort.

Los Establos Equestrian City Inaugurated

Considered as an internationally unique project, Los Establos aims to position the Dominican Republic as a global equine destination.

Los Establos, Equestrian City is considered as the most monumental and complete Equestrian Center in the Caribbean and Latin-America, framed in a land lot of three million square meters located inside of Cap Cana, was officially inaugurated within the framework of a series of equestrian activities.

Mr. Abraham Hazoury Toral, President of the development group of Los Establos, along with Mrs. Maria Amelia Hazoury Delgado, Executive Vice President, welcomed all guests.

When it comes to my mind the best place where I could live in a near future I always think in the Dominican Republic.

Living in this country for three years had made me open the eyes and realize many reasons why staying here forever could be possible.

There are properties for sale in the Dominican Republic that looks like a dream for people from countries where they barely see the sun or just enjoy the sun during summer. In the Dominican Republic you will find sun almost every day. Also, spaces here are bigger than anywhere, while in Spain my house would be 1,000 Sqft, here I could buy a house of 3,000 Sqft. And what about people: Dominicans are so nice, always smiling and ready to help you, even if they are not able to. Those would be one of the main reasons for buying a property here.

This magic island is growing fast. Many new projects are developing and Dominican Republic is expected to become the main destination of the Caribbean. Punta Cana International Airport is the second airport in the Caribbean. It offers direct flights from 28 countries and 96 cities around the world.

Properties for sale in the Dominican Republic are mostly offered in the touristic areas and Santo Domingo, the capital. Touristic areas are located in the north and East of the Island: Puerto Plata and Samana in the North, while Punta Cana, Cap Cana and Casa de Campo are in the East. There are 4 hotels including Eden Roc, a Relais Chateaux. In addition, Hyatt has begun the construction of two new hotels and so has Karisma.

There are more than 25 residential communities of beach, marina, golf and countryside, which are already consolidated, as well as more than 30 restaurants, numerous shops and several beach clubs. Cap Cana SA ha logrado pagar en enero de 2018 la totalidad de su deuda internacional que ascendía a 364 millones de dólares

Cap Cana SA había emitido deuda para financiar las fuertes inversiones en infraestructuras de un destino que no paraba de crecer y atraer demanda internacional de inversión inmobiliaria. El campo de golf de Punta Espada, un Jack Nicklaus Signature y la Marina in-land más grande del Caribe fueron las obras más emblemáticas pero no las que requerían de más fondos para atender a los numerosos desarrollos inmobiliarios en marcha, todos vendidos sobre plano.

Las verdaderas infraestructuras necesarias eran los más de 45km de carreteras pavimentadas, los 23 MW de generación eléctrica, los 70 km de cable eléctrico soterrado y otros 50km aéreos (ahora ya todos soterrados), los 112 km de tuberías para agua potable y riego, las 6 estaciones de bombeo y tanques de almacenamiento de hormigón, los 100km de fibra óptica para comunicaciones, el Club de Playa Caletón, las oficinas, las residencias de empleados, el colegios CCHS, la Universidad Unibe. El segundo campo de golf, Las Iguanas, no pudo terminarse, pero se alcanzó una inversión en infraestructuras de más de 1,000 millones de dólares.

Con el ritmo de ventas de los años 2006 y primer semestre de 2007, el escenario resultaba muy positivo (800 millones de dólares vendidos en un periodo de 12 meses). Sin embargo, la crisis frenó las ventas y redujo la liquidez a su mínima expresión.

El vencimiento de la deuda en 2013 se convertía en inalcanzable, por lo que llegó a un acuerdo con los bonistas para prorrogar el mismo hasta 2016, con la aportación de nuevas garantías. Esas nuevas garantías impidieron la finalización de los proyectos pignorados, con la consiguiente mala imagen para Cap Cana y la desconfianza de los inversores que se alejaban de este gran destino confundiendo la sociedad promotora (y propietaria de grandes extensiones de terreno) Cap Cana SA, con el destino Cap Cana donde más de 1,800 propietarios disponían de terrenos (todos los urbanizados), villas y apartamentos.

Hasta el año 2013 Cap Cana logró salvar la crisis con una reestructuración completa de la empresa y utilizando el trueque como forma de comercio, para poder seguir manteniendo el destino en las mejores condiciones posibles. Convencer a los propietarios que pagaran sus cuotas de mantenimiento fue un trabajo arduo, dado que muchos consideraban el proyecto como quebrado (respecto de la realidad que consistía en una acuciante falta de liquidez). El incremento de los ingresos y la reducción de los costes de mantenimiento a un nivel de supervivencia, pero pagando a los proveedores, se vieron compensados con una mejora paulatina del estado general y en la vuelta a la confianza de algunos inversores.

El año 2013 vio el nacimiento de la Asociación de Propietarios de Cap Cana, Aporcap, creada esencialmente con la finalidad de lograr un perfecto mantenimiento del proyecto desde una Asociación sin Ánimo de Lucro, desde la que gestionar los ingresos aportados por todos los propietarios. Ese paso fue clave en poder presentar Cap Cana (el destino) como un lugar idílico para la inversión, dado que la garantía de un buen mantenimiento ofrecía la tranquilidad a los inversores para poner sus fondos en un lugar paradisiaco por su clima, belleza natural, seguridad, playas, Marina, Punta Espada, cercanía del aeropuerto de Punta Cana, etc.

Cuando la inversión se ha visto reducida a la insignificancia, empezar de nuevo resulta costoso. Por eso tuvo más valor el desarrollo de Los Establos (las instalaciones ecuestres más completas y lujosas del Caribe), la finalización del Hotel Tiara, la construcción del Hotel Secrets, el desarrollo de Caleton Oceanside, la finalización y entrega de dos fases de Green Village y otras obras e infraestructuras que se han ido realizando en los últimos años.

Al anunciarse la total cancelación de la deuda internacional de Cap Cana SA en enero de 2018, existen en el destino los siguientes proyectos de desarrollo en fase de planificación o de construcción: dos hoteles Hyatt, dos hoteles Karisma, Il Lago, 7 Mares, Iguanas Gardens, Ocean 21, Serenissima, Lakeside Villas, The Lofts, Gardens Villas, 17 villas privadas de diferentes propietarios y otros proyectos deportivos, inmobiliarios y hospitalarios que irán saliendo a la luz en breve.

En ninguno de los proyectos indicados más arriba interviene Cap Cana SA como promotor o inversor, lo que da idea de la plena confianza que multitud de inversores están poniendo en Cap Cana, que crece de la mano de la iniciativa privada y de la diversificación de promotores.

La cancelación de la deuda de Cap Cana va a atraer sin embargo a un mayor número de compradores finales que no tenían tiempo ni capacidad para estudiar los riesgos reales de Cap Cana como destino y se quedaban en la deuda fallida de Cap Cana SA.

Cap Cana vuelve a ser el destino del futuro. Un lugar para vacacionar, residir, trabajar e invertir.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Cap Cana was built with the objective of being a sustainable development. Community planners and operators took wildlife habitat protection into account throughout the construction process and operating plan, environmental risks and liabilities were identified and reviewed as a part of overall risk management. Several green technologies were adopted since the construction phase:

Wildlife Protection
  1. Cap Cana actively engages in the conservation project of the Ridgway’s Hawk, promoted and encouraged in Dominican Republic by The Peregrine Fund. As part of this program, the nests are safeguarded, access to biologists and local technicians is prioritized for data collection and treating nestlings of the population that resides in Cap Cana, and periodical conservation training workshops are held for gardening and security personnel.
  2. The Ricordi iguanas found in the golf course area coexist with players, while their natural habitat adjacent to nearby streets are identified with crossing signage indicating drivers precautions should be taken.
  3. Scape Park in its excursions promotes the appreciation and conservation of the endemic and foreign flora and fauna that can be observed in their multiple nature trails.   6. Rescue of bee hives from areas where they could be exterminated. The hives are moved to areas dedicated to beekeeping where high nectar and pollen plants have been grown.
  7. During the sea turtle spawning season, the beaches are monitored at night and their nesting areas are preserved to help increase the turtle population.
Protection of the Air and its Quality:
  1. Cap Cana’s electricity generation is carried out with a Wärtsilä plant, the company’s technology focuses on energy efficiency and aims to reduce energy consumption and emissions as these are important in controlling climate change, Wärtsilä products comply with various environmental regulations. The efficiency of the Wärtsilä diesel and gas engines of the power generation plant that operates Cap Cana Caribe have a minimum emission of CO2 gases and very low noise levels.
Water Protection:
  1. Through the use of a geophone, the technicians of Aguas de Cap Cana inspect all water lines of Cap Cana and the water connections of vacant lots.   • Parrotfish fishing and consumption are prohibited by law.
Recycling and Reuse of Waste:
  1. Heritage School has a collection center for recycling. At the Information and Sales center, glass bottles, magazines and plastic bags are donated to artisans in the community of Nuevo Juanillo and Veron who use them to produce wallets and household items.
  2. The equestrian area of ​​Los Establos has a compost program to convert manure into fertilizer that is used in its facilities and marketed in the organic products market held on Sundays.

With the support of President Danilo Medina, Playa Hotels & Resorts Corporation presented the start of construction of its hotels Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana, in the famous tourist real estate destination, located in the Punta Cana area.

Hyatt Hotels disembark in Cap Cana

HYATT HOTELS START INVESTMENT IN CAP CANA

Hyatt announces the construction of 750 hotel rooms in Juanillo Beach, Cap Cana, an idyllic destination in the Caribbean, in the East of Dominican Republic, next to Punta Cana International Airport.

Playa Hotels & Resorts, owner and operator of all-inclusive resorts (including Hyatt’s Ziva and Zilara brands), will launch a new brand and be presented to the public next year.

Playa reached an agreement to operate resorts under an established lifestyle consumer brand. It will be the only publicly traded resort company, Wardinski said. The company maintains the name of Playa.
About $ 200 million will be used to launch the new brand, while the rest will go to renovate existing complexes as well as further expansion, including the construction of a 750-room Hyatt Ziva-Hyatt Zilara complex in Cap Cana, which forms part of the Dominican Republic Punta Cana tourist area. Currently, Playa owns and operates 13 resorts totaling nearly 6,200 rooms in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Mexico.
Founded in 2006, Playa had owned and operated resorts under the Barcelo brand and AMResorts’ secrets and dreams brands until 2013, when it reached an agreement with Hyatt to rewrite six resorts under the new Ziva and Zilara brands.

“There are amazing opportunities in the all-inclusive segment,” said Wardinski, who will continue to oversee the company with its leadership team.

Dominican Republic grows by over 6.5% in 2016 for the third consecutive year.Inflation continues to remain below 3%

The Dominican Republic will grow by over 6.5% in 2016, according to data from the Central Bank, after making it to 7.6% and 7.0% respectively in 2014 and 2015. The country accumulates 10 years with an average growth of 4.8%.

The good news are that this growth is accompanied by controlled inflation below 2% despite the rise in the price of oil. In 2015 inflation was only 0.8% lowering the 3% of the previous year, due to the fall in the price of fuels.

The moderate and constant devaluation of the peso against the US dollar allows us to boost productivity and give added security to the foreign investor. In the last 10 years, the average devaluation has been 3.8%, with 2.27% this last year 2016.

These macroeconomic data, accompanied by political and social stability, as well as favorable legislation, taxation and legal security, make the Dominican Republic one of the most attractive countries for foreign investment.

The climate that enjoys the East of the country, humid at night and sunny by day, with constant sea breeze, minimum annual temperatures of 21ºC and maximum of 32ºC, make residential tourism is growing exponentially in areas such as Juan ), Punta Cana, Bavaro, Ubero Alto and Miches.

The destination Cap Cana is proving particularly attractive: a closed residential and hotel community that has begun in recent months the construction of 1,270 rooms. The opening of the Hotel Secrets in December 2016 and the announcement of Hyatt for the construction of two hotels with 750 rooms are a sign of the thrust with which this idyllic destination has returned.

 

 

República Dominicana crece en 2016 por encima del 6.5% por tercer año consecutivo. La inflación se sigue manteniendo por debajo del 3%

La República Dominicana crecerá en 2016 por encima del 6.5% de acuerdo con los datos del Banco Central, tras hacerlo al 7.6% y 7.0% respectivamente los años 2014 y 2015. El país acumula 10 años con un crecimiento medio del 4.8%.

La buena noticia es que este crecimiento viene acompañado de una inflación controlada por debajo del 2% a pesar del repunte del precio del petróleo. En 2015 la inflación fue de tan sólo el 0.8% rebajando el 3% del año anterior, a causa de la caída del precio de los combustibles.

La moderada y constante devaluación del peso respeto del dólar estadounidense permite afianzar la productividad y dar una seguridad añadida al inversor extranjero. En los últimos 10 años, la devaluación media ha sido del 3.8%, con un 2.27% este último año 2016.

Estos datos macroeconómicos, acompañados de la estabilidad política y social, así como de la favorable legislación, fiscalidad y seguridad jurídica, hacen de la República Dominicana uno de los países más atractivos para la inversión extranjera.

El clima que disfruta el Este del país, húmedo por la noches y soleado por el día, con brisa constante del mar, temperaturas mínimas anuales de 21ºC y máximas de 32ºC, hacen que el turismo residencial esté creciendo exponencialmente en áreas como Juanillo (Cap Cana), Punta Cana, Bávaro, Úbero Alto y Miches.

 El destino Cap Cana está resultando particularmente atractivo: una comunidad hotelera y residencial cerrada que ha iniciado en los últimos meses la construcción de 1,270 habitaciones. A new era at Los Establos, Ciudad Ecuestre

Dominican Republic is the host for the first professional event of “Polo High Handicap”, member of the “World Polo Tour”. To be allowed to participate, players must have a 22 Handicap, a high level on this sport.

Three big businessmen, representatives of Casa de Campo, Los Establos Ciudad Ecuestre at Cap Cana and Lechuza Caracas Club RD, have made together this project a reality to be held during the season December 30, 2015 to April 2016, and will mark a before and after in the polo in the country.

Some of the best players worldwide, as well as other recognized international players, will score points in these tournaments that will be part of the World Polo Tour.

With this enterprise, Dominican Republic is comparable with countries in which the highest level of polo, such as Argentina, USA, England, France, Spain and Dubai is played.

2015 hurricane season

The 2015 Atlantic hurricane season is a current event in the annual tropical cyclone season in the northern hemisphere. The season officially began on June 1, 2015, and will end on November 30, 2015. These dates historically describe the period each year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin and are adopted by convention. However, the formation of tropical cyclones is possible at any time of the year.

A strong tropical low exited the coast of Africa, and under favorable conditions became Tropical Depression Four on August 18. The depression was quickly upgraded into Tropical Storm Danny.  Danny has strengthened into the first hurricane of the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season.

Hurricane Danny was located about 1,030 miles east of the Windward Islands in the eastern Atlantic Ocean as of 5 p.m. EDT Thursday.  Maximum sustained winds are now 80 mph with higher gusts.  Some additional strengthening is possible as Danny moves west-northwest over the next several days. It will be until early next week before Danny reaches the longitude of the Lesser Antilles.  Danny is then expected to weaken in the eastern Caribbean Sea.
TIPS TO PREPARE

BEFORE A HURRICANE

To prepare for a hurricane, you should take the following measures:

  • To begin preparing, you should build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan.
  • Know your surroundings.
  • Learn the elevation level of your property and whether the land is flood-prone. This will help you know how your property will be affected when storm surge or tidal flooding are forecasted.
  • Identify levees and dams in your area and determine whether they pose a hazard to you.
  • Learn community hurricane evacuation routes and how to find higher ground. Determine where you would go and how you would get there if you needed to evacuate.
  • Make plans to secure your property:
  • Cover all of your home’s windows. Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5/8” exterior grade or marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. Another year-round option would be installation of laminated glass with impact-resistant glazing. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.
  • Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. This will reduce roof damage.
  • Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed so they are more wind resistant.
  • Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
  • Reinforce your garage doors; if wind enters a garage it can cause dangerous and expensive structural damage.
  • Plan to bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down.
  • Determine how and where to secure your boat.
  • Install a generator for emergencies.
  • If in a high-rise building, when high winds are present, be prepared to take shelter on a lower floor because wind conditions increase with height, and in a small interior room without windows. When flooding may be occuring, be prepared to take shelter on a floor safely above the flooding and wave effects.
  • Consider building a safe room.

Hurricanes cause heavy rains that can cause extensive flood damage in coastal and inland areas. Everyone is at risk and should consider flood insurance protection.

DURING A HURRICANE

If a hurricane is likely in your area, you should:

  • Listen to the radio or TV for information.
  • Secure your home, close storm shutters and secure outdoor objects or bring them indoors.
  • Turn off utilities if instructed to do so. Otherwise, turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and keep its doors closed.
  • Turn off propane tanks
  • Avoid using the phone, except for serious emergencies.
  • Moor your boat if time permits.
  • Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purpose such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other larger containers with water.
  • Find out how to keep food safe during and after and emergency.

You should evacuate under the following conditions:

If you are directed by local authorities to do so. Be sure to follow their instructions.

  • If you live in a mobile home or temporary structure – such shelter are particularly hazardous during hurricane no matter how well fastened to the ground.
  • If you live in a high-rise building – hurricane winds are stronger at higher elevations.
  • If you live on the coast, on a floodplain, near a river, or on an island waterway.

Read more about evacuating yourself and your family. If you are unable to evacuate, go to your wind-safe room. If you do not have one, follow these guidelines:

  • Stay indoors during the hurricane and away from windows and glass doors.
  • Close all interior doors – secure and brace external doors.
  • Keep curtains and blinds closed. Do not be fooled if there is a lull; it could be the eye of the storm – winds will pick up again.
  • Take refuge in a small interior room, closet or hallway on the lowest level.
  • Lie on the floor under a table or another sturdy object.
  • Avoid elevators.

AFTER A HURRICANE

  • Continue listening to a NOAA Weather Radio or the local news for the latest updates.
  • Stay alert for extended rainfall and subsequent flooding even after the hurricane or tropical storm has ended.
  • If you have become separated from your family, use your family communications plan
  • If you evacuated, return home only when officials say it is safe.
  • Drive only if necessary and avoid flooded roads and washed out bridges. Stay off the streets. If you must go out watch for fallen objects; downed electrical wires; and weakened walls, bridges, roads, and sidewalks.
  • Keep away from loose or dangling power lines and report them immediately to the power company.
  • Walk carefully around the outside your home and check for loose power lines, gas leaks and structural damage before entering.
  • Stay out of any building if you smell gas, floodwaters remain around the building or your home was damaged by fire and the authorities have not declared it safe.
  • Inspect your home for damage. Take pictures of damage, both of the building and its contents, for insurance purposes. If you have any doubts about safety, have your residence inspected by a qualified building inspector or structural engineer before entering.
  • Use battery-powered flashlights in the dark. Do NOT use candles. Note: The flashlight should be turned on outside before entering – the battery may produce a spark that could ignite leaking gas, if present.
  • Watch your pets closely and keep them under your direct control. Watch out for wild animals, especially poisonous snakes. Use a stick to poke through debris.
  • Avoid drinking or preparing food with tap water until you are sure it’s not contaminated.
  • Check refrigerated food for spoilage. If in doubt, throw it out.
  • Wear protective clothing and be cautious when cleaning up to avoid injury.
  • Use the telephone only for emergency calls.
  • NEVER use a generator inside homes, garages, crawlspaces, sheds, or similar areas, even when using fans or opening doors and windows for ventilation. Deadly levels of carbon monoxide can quickly build up in these areas and can linger for hours, even after the generator has shut off.

We also recommend to be aware of national communications delivered by the emergency and disaster agencies of the Dominican Republic and the ONAMET (National Meteorology Agency), as well as CCTel’s Channel 10.
